Pebble Beach Concours | Monterey Auto Week
September 10, 2015
Unlike many of the revered Concours dElegance events, Pebble Beach seems to reach deeper into mainstream media and pop culture. Regular people on the streets have heard of it. No doubt, its one of he very finest events of this kind in the world, but it more than that. The events of Monterey and Pebble Beach are household names for a reason.
While the top shelf multi-million dollar restored cars get most of the attention, its the diversity of the weeks events that truly separate it from most other events. Perhaps only the famed Goodwood Festival of Speed in UK compares to the size and scope of Monterey Week.
The event is elegantly capped with the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours dElegance, but what else goes on there? Were glad you asked. An endless stream of tasteful parties take place throughout the week. Even if you could manage tickets to all of them, the sheer volume of them would make it tough to attend them all. Among the gatherings, the incredible McCalls Motorworks Revival features gourmet dining, rare vintage cars and state-of-the-art super cars housed inside two hangars. The surrounding tarmac displays an exotic collection of modern and classic aircraft.

The parties are just the appetizers to the main course of car shows, of which there are plenty. Carmel-by-the-Sea, Automobilia Monterey and The Quail are just a few of the shows displaying hundreds of fine collector and sports cars during the week. The punchy Little Car Show offers an entire car show of sub-1601cc vehicles while the humorous Concours dLemons takes things less seriously, judging vehicles more for their warts, than their provenance.
The cars get out on the road, too. Classic Motorsports Magazine Monterey Kickoff Cruise-In, Pebble Beach Tour dElegance presented by Rolex and the epic Pebble Beach Motoring Classic are just a few of the opportunities to get out on the open road during the week. Even race cars get in on the action at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway.
The biggest problem you might have is that youll see something you want. Youre covered here too, with various auctions nightly from RM | Sothebys, Russo and Steele, Gooding & Co. and more. World record-setting automobile prices regularly occur during Monterey Week, with Ferraris, Porsches and many other marques changing hands furiously.
Youd think that a full week of parties, shows, touring and auctions would wear patrons out. Somehow, many of them manage to drag themselves out of bed before dawn on the final Sunday. The draw is to watch the famous Pebble Beach Concours come to life in the early morning hours, as scores of incredible collector cars make their way to the show field. Dawn Patrol as its affectionately called, has become somewhat of an insiders treat, drawing hundreds of exhausted coffee-sipping automobile lovers out of bed bright and early to see the cars.

Its the scope of the thing that makes it a household name. No matter your passion or interest, Monterey Week leaves nothing behind. The incredibly rare and celebrated automobiles of the world are all on hand. The pageantry, tradition and scenery are second to none before the Concours dElegance even begins and leaps out of this world when it finally does.
