General Motors and most other American car manufacturers had the full size car market locked down with popular trim levels and options in the 1950's. As time went on, General Motors jumped into the compact car market with the Chevrolet Corvair, then the Pontiac Tempest, broadening the product offering. To bridge the gap between the full size cars and the compact cars, General Motors created a mid-size, full-frame platform that is commonly referred to as the A-Body. This platform ultimately ran from 1964 to 1981 with the most popular segment being 1964 through 1972, which was the height of the muscle car era.

When the A-body platform was engineered, it had a cubic inch limit, mandated by General Motors. Pontiac stepped out of the box to create a limited-run option package called the GTO to skirt past the limitation, which would feature Pontiac's 389ci V8. The concept of a big engine in a mid-sized car kicked off the muscle car era with the Pontiac GTO leading the pack early on. Soon Chevrolet would respond with the Chevelle SS396, and then Buick and Oldsmobile would jump in with high performance versions of their A-body vehicles. General Motors eventually lifted the engine size limitations, which led to the 1970 model-year frenzy with engines such as the Chevrolet 454, Pontiac 455, Buick 455 and Oldsmobile 455.

During the evolution of the General Motors A-body platform, tires were drastically changing. Originally, A-body cars were using sizes such as 700-14, mounted to 14x5-inch steel wheels. Special models were fitted with larger tires and wheels for additional traction, ultimately leading to sizes such as F70-14, and even F60-15 mounted to 15x7-inch wheels. Coker Tire is proud to offer authentic bias ply tires as well as modern radials and steel wheels for A-body applications.
